The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 5,000, according to government data released on Friday. Authorities are still struggling to control the deadliest Ebola epidemic ever recorded in the country. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved treatments or vaccines exist, as reported by Reuters via the BBC.
Late detection, ongoing conflicts, and overwhelmed medical services have accelerated the virus’s spread more rapidly than in previous outbreaks. Eight out of Congo’s 26 provinces have been affected, with many fatalities occurring outside treatment centers.

This year’s epidemic is the second largest in history, following the 2014-2016 outbreak that infected over 28,600 people and claimed more than 11,000 lives in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Last week, Nigeria reported its first Ebola case, becoming the fourth African country to do so, thereby extending the epidemic’s reach to West Africa. Eastern African countries like Kenya and Uganda have also reported cases.
